| |
I have limited tanking experience at this point. Until now I have been a leveling fury warrior and mostly soloed with the occasional instance thrown in. I recently hit 60 and did a lot of research on builds, tanking strats, gear, etc. I re-specced to a 34/3/11 build and spent some time on my own getting used to new talents, rage generation, and such.
I have started focusing on running instances and I'm noticing one common thread - I can't hold agro on multiple mobs. Now I'm asking here (and I'm going to explain what I'm doing) because I can't tell if it's me doing something wrong or the groups I'm in. It seems the same in all the groups I have been in so far so I'm thinking it's me. The mobs are pulled, I get intial agro on all, and within 10 secs all but my target are bouncing around the group.
So here is my game plan and what I try to do. I will use last night in BRD as an example.
Our group - Mage, priest, rogue, hunter, warrior.
Mob group - 3 elite, 2 regular
Pull - Mage sheeps one elite, the rest come
My target - Highest lvl elite
What I do - As soon as I see the mage start casting I pop Bloodrage. When the charging mobs get within range I hit Demo. I now have agro on all. I begin sundering my target as fast as rage generation will let me, hitting revenge and shield block when I can. When I get to 3 sunders I switch targets to the next elite and repeat. I pop 1 sunder in each of the remaining mobs and end up back at my origonal target. I then will only come off that target if it dies or healer is getting agro by another mob.
Here is the problem - In the above scenario before I can even get 2 sunders in my target the rest of the mobs are already all over the group. I then have to try and run around and gain control. Not fun, not good. Mobs are pounding on the mage, healer and hunter. Rogue is off tanking an elite and has been since they came in (what the?). Healer is doing double duty on rogue and myself. It just seems like utter chaos.
So, are the pulls ending up like this because I'm doing something wrong and everyone is trying to clean up my mess? Or, are others in the group not doing what they are supposed to do and making my life hard.
Any insight and or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Are you familiar with or aware of what the rogue, hunter and mage are targeting? If the group isn't focusing fire on your target, this can easily break up group pulls.
Sounds more like a targetting issue for the groupmates, as you seem to be paying attention to multiple mobs and have a plan.
edit- also, pacing might play a part. With enough elites, they should be giving time for you to build aggro before unloading DPS. If the groups tactic is to have everything on the tank, then they have to allow for that to be established.[ post edited by Tseric ]
