I just rolled a mage, having played a bit of one some many months back.
I'd appreciate a look at the State of the Mage from players who have leveled up a ways.
For what it's worth, I'm wanting to go Arcane to get my Evocation and then go either fire or frost, changing to lotsa frost toward the 60 level.
Worth playing? Can I expect some improvement from 1.11 when it shows up? I personally find the direct damage fun, and it seems to me those who have favored Warlock are missing out on that, as I'm under the impression Warlocks DPS is much lower. Plus, I can't handle the big blue guy with lounge singer cuff links.

In 1.11 there will be some new spell mechanics which were heretofore unseen in the game. These mechanics deal mostly with threat managment and/or crit bonuses. There will also be talents that support mutiple spell schools, which will assist in the balance and playability between trees. Overall, the retooling of the talent trees looks to free up talent points and tighten the effects on talents to allow easier point expenditure throughout the three trees.
And that's about as specific as I can get right now :P
