With nearly every method to setting a tooltip to display an item, there is a counterpart api that returns the item link(ie GameTooltip:SetTradeSkillItem(index) and GetTradeSkillItemLink(index)). It would be most handy if we could have a counterpart function for the following Tooltip methods:
SetAuctionSellItem,
SetBuyBackItem,
SetInboxItem,
SetLootRollItem,
SetSendMailItem
As it stands, there is no easy way to determine the itemID of an item in any of these locations, and it is nearly impossible to do so if the item has an enchantment on it. This means that GetItemInfo is useless for these locations, and that I must scan the tooltip to determine what slot if any the item can be equiped to which is considerably less efficient than a call to GetItemInfo. In addition it makes memoizing results from calculations on these items nearly impossible. Would it be possible to get these functions added?[ post edited by Cairenn ]

The criteria for adding those functions is:
"Can you shift-click them to add a chat link for the item?"
In the case of the buyback slot, you can't by design. In the other cases, I'd have to look and see whether they meet those criteria and were just missed. I don't know when I'll have time to look at them though.

It's probably never going to happen. In the several hours it would take to implement and test those, I can fix class bugs, add designer requested game features, or add things like Frame:GetType(), etc.
Edit: I did add shift/ctrl-click functionality to the loot rolling windows, FYI. :)[ post edited by slouken ]
