Subject: XML WOW Format and other info
I am new to doing uimods and have a decent understanding of XML and HTML as well as some scripting knowledge although lua is completely new to me.

What I want to know is there a place that has a description of the complete layout needed for the xml files as well as all the attributes and the parameters that can go inside them?

I've looked at wow.wiki.com and while it is a good site, I feel there is some information that is lacking. Such as all files start and end with <UI> tag. There is a <Frames> and <Frame> tag, <Layers> and <Layer> tag. These are just some examples of the tags that are present.

It seems like I must have either a <Frame> tag or <Button> tag to get something to display or happen on the screen. Is this correct?

If I just use a <Frame> tag without anything else, a frame will be there, but I will not be able to see it. Do I have to give it a background or will borders suffice? Are the <Layers> or <Layer> tags necessary for it to display properly?

I plan on playing around with it, but want to have some basic knowledge of what is needed to get things going.

I have read the sticky posts, but I dont want to just follow someones directions to get this displayed or this message to appear, I want a thorough understanding of what is going on. In one of the stickies it was suggestd that we ready the BasicControls.xml. Is this a good place with decent documentation to start?

I am headed there now to look it over and I am sure some of you are saying why did'nt you look before posting. Well I did not think about it until now.

Thanks for any and all information and if this has been posted before, my apologies.

Q u o t e:

The XSD contains most of the element definitions, last time I checked it was only missing a couple of frames, and you should be able to find examples of those in Blizzard's XML code.

I believe the XSD is complete, as of 1.7 (we validated all of our XML at that point)
