| |
Users of AddOns with saved settings should know the following important information for how to upgrade to 1.7 without losing their settings.
The information presented below has already been posted in other threads; however, the information in those threads if buried among a bunch of other AddOn developer gobblty-!@!$. It is re-presented here in the hopes that AddOn *users* read it before they lose all their settings.
The following procedure is recommended for upgrading to 1.7:
1. Download the 1.7 WoW client patch.
2. Run the patcher.
3. Run WoW.
4. When WoW tells you your AddOns are out of date and asks you if you'd like to load them anyway, say "Load Anyway".
5. Make sure that version checking is disabled.
6. Load up your character with your AddOns still enabled.
7. Log out.
You should do all the above steps right away. Do not load up a character without your AddOns being enabled. If you do the above 7 steps, that should cause your saved variables to be migrated from the old 1.6 format to the new 1.7 format without losing data. After that, you can safely load up your character without all of your AddOns enabled until you get a chance to download the newer versions of the AddOns.
Developers: please correct me if I've gotten anything wrong.
Users: please spread the word to all your friends so they don't have to come here next week asking where all their settings went (and so they don't get mad at you for not warning them about it when they find out all *your* settings are fine :-).

Q u o t e: I followed all the steps and my first login to a character everything is fine but if I log out and log another character nothing works. If I exit out and delete the savedvariables.lua file then log back in everything works fine again. Until I log back out. Is this normal?
No, but a lot of people have been reporting symptoms like these. What addons do you have? What exactly do you mean by "nothing works"? Where is your SavedVariables.lua file(s)? Do you have files in WTF\Account\<youraccount>\SavedVariables\?

Mmmm, no, it should be okay.
I'll take a look and see if I can reproduce the problem with reloading the UI. It _sounds_ like the addon specific saved variable files aren't being re-loaded when reloading the UI, although I can't imagine how that could be...
Does it happen over and over again, even when you restart WoW?

I just double-checked, and saved variables are being reloaded when the UI is reloaded...
So, any more clues? :)

1. Quit WoW
2. Remove the directory WTF\Account\<accountname>\SavedVariables
3. Copy your SavedVariables.lua file to WTF\Account\<accountname>\SavedVariables.lua
4. Start WoW
5. Enable all the addons you want the data saved for at the character selection screen.
6. Log in
7. Quit WoW
You should have all your old settings migrated to the new format.

Q u o t e: I've been having problems with the new SavedVariables\*.lua as well. I upgraded to 1.7 format just fine.
However, if I quit WoW, edit one of the lua files (tested with SavedVariables\Titan.lua), and start WoW, the settings have magically reverted back to what they were before I edited the file. I only have one copy of SavedVariables.lua (not much in it anymore - just the core stuff and addons that use RegisterForSave).
Any ideas?
Yep, these are the symptoms of an addon which is using an obsolete method of initializing variables. See this thread for details:
