So I hit 300 fishing last week and was excited to enter the fishing contest in STV at 2pm.
I am on PvP server, so I figure I might run into some alliance here or there. I ask a druid friend of mine to help out.
Well, when I started fishing, I was ganked by a roving gang of alliance decked out in epics, all in the same guild. Me and the druid didn't stand a chance. I made the long run back and started fishing again.
If it wasn't alliance, it was other Horde.
Later, I ran into another roving guild party, this time members of the biggest, most successful Horde guild on our server. Not only did they fish my hole, but one person kept jumping up and down in front of my bobber, making it difficult to click when I had a bite, forcing me to leave the spot.
Then I was ganked again.
After 30 minutes, the winner was announced: an epic'd out, former high warlord from said Horde guild. You need 40 fish to win: I had 20 at the time.
I don't mind losing, but I mind never having a chance to win. The way this contest is constructed is that if you have the backing of a big powerful guild, you can win. If you're running solo, you can't.
I understand being on a PvP server and all that ganking is a fact of life, but shouldn't that factor be eliminated in a fishing contest? Why not make the fishing happen in town or an instance? To me, this contest is not about skill and luck but about the backing of a large guild.
I love the idea of a fishing contest, it's execution leaves a lot to be desired.
