Subject: Discussion: Target Dummies
These days, theorycrafting often involves a lot of collecting data and parsing information. Unfortunately, there is a distinct lack of standard of 'enemy' and many variables are not defined; thus, many such tests are defined relative to each other. Examples of this include running melee damage tests against the same boss mob, or perhaps throughout the course of an instance. Another example is dueling a friend for hours and letting him hit you. The problem with the first is one of time; since bosses don't live very long, and there is often a week between kills, it's inconvenient to collect data. Having multiple collect data helps, but is complicated by differences in gear, lag, playstyle, etc. The problem with dueling a friend is that that person has to be a healer to be convenient at all, and this is also unduly time consuming for both parties.

Nonetheless, given the lack of concrete formulas for many functions of melee, and people just wanting to try out new specs or combinations of weapons, it's interesting that there isn't some kind of practice field for testing.

Solution: Introduce 'Target Dummies' at some designated zone. These objects/NPC's/whatever are Level 60, with Zero mitigation (or perhaps, have designated, different, mitigation), 300 defense skill, and INFINITE HEALTH. Perhaps there could be one with a boss-level (but known characteristics, as to eliminate problems addressed earlier). The purpose of such objects would be to allow a melee player, however tediously, to gain REPEATABLE and COMPARABLE data, from Recap or what have you. Given a static punching bag, you could simply leave autoattack on and go have lunch and come back with 20 minutes of autoattack data, instead of swearing that Chrommagus makes you move ever minute for a breath.

How would you address players using them as an easy way to skill-up weapons? At first glance, that seems like the biggest potential exploit of such a thing.

P.S.- We can make this a discussion rather than a petition.

Q u o t e:
More realistically, if Blizzard doesn't mind people trying to gain easy access to the underlying mechanics behind the game, then just make it a test-realms only feature. Who cares if you can max out polearms on a character that'll get wiped periodically anyhow?

Indeed. Having test dummies on a test realm seems fairly reasonable. Having test dummies on a live realm is sort of incorporating meta-gaming into the game. Don't know how many creative dev folks would really be on board with that.

...and I find it interesting how people are STILL giving the same response. Please, people, read the rest of the thread before knee-jerk responding, k? 3 pages of "we can already do it x, y, and z way) is a bit overdone.

Unavoidable. People will never hesitate at the opportunity to one-up a blue poster. Forget the discussion, it's the sense of self worth that's important :P

Wow. If I had posted this in another thread, I would be accused of trolling, and rightly so.

What's the email address for CM feedback again? I've never before cared, and probably never will again, but...this is incredibly rude, dismissive, and condescending to people who are trying to have a civil discussion about a game mechanic they'd like to see adjusted.

wowcmfeedback@blizzard.com

Originally, this was labelled a petition thread. I offered a question to direct the discussion away from possible /signs. I followed up with another post to keep the conversation moving. Then, I made the comment you are referencing now.

First off, it was a mild joke, hence the :P However, if you are going to be offended, I can't really stop you.

Second, when several pages reiterate the same point, I don't see that as a civil discussion of game mechanics, I see that as posts that have to be scrolled through to get to the posts from people who are actually reading the thread and contributing thoughts that expound off of what has already been written.

You are more than welcome to accuse me of condescension, but I have to disagree if you think I am obstructing conversation. On the contrary, I endorsed it here.
