Subject: Raids epic? Not so much...
Here's a new fresh take on the whole raiding scene for you!

I do believe back on the design table when Blizzard was creating WoW, raids were looked upon as the ultimate epic experience. Big bosses, 40 people, super fine tuned teamwork, etc. Very difficult to pull off for most players by design, hence the rewards are epic as well! Probably most people wouldn't be able to tackle such experiences, leaving only the best and most dedicated to defeat them. Since not many people would be able to acquire such epic gear due to the difficulty of the experience, it won't affect the majority of the other players anyway.

Where did this go wrong you ask? Maybe Blizz expected this, maybe they didn't: Mods. Just think about it. Look at say Molten Core for example, first raid experience on an epic level, difficulty for Lucifron is de-cursing players in time before they get damaged badly. This would take a set of players that know what they are doing to decurse others in time, and to know how to avoid the curse in the first place. But we get Decursive Mod :) Allowing much less effective people to play in the raid and do the job just fine by spamming one key. This applies to pretty much all other raids. Yes, BWL requires more team work, but take away mods, and it will be twice as hard if not more.

There are tons of other examples, CT_raid... while provides a nice UI representation of the raid (totally cool), apparently it is hard for some players to tell what's happening with the bosses. So they get nice big blotches of text telling them what each boss is about to do a few secs prior to doing it. Again, making raids much easier than intended and in turn opening up access to epics to people that probably wouldn't have been able to get them.

The list goes on and on.. threat managment mods, healing mods, etc etc. Now, I do agree that these mods do provide convineance for those players that already would have done fine without them, helps removed the tediousness.

Think about this the next time you run into some 60 that is fully decked out in epics but is completely clueless on how to actually play his/her character effectively in say pvp. They may beat you due to gear advantage, but you will know that it was nothing but that.

You have touched on a good topic. I have often wondered about the effects of mods with regards to the difficulty of the game as-is. It is obvious that mods are made to ease play style. I make no value judgements of my own and leave this open for discussion.

The fact that this deals with an important issue, yet does not incorporate the terms "basement-dweller" or "wants free epics" is pleasing.

Q u o t e:
I think that's interesting... though your comments may have just opened the floodgates on the terms (and similar) that you just mentioned.

Can you answer for us... does the interal Blizzard test group use mods of any sort? Or are they solely required to use the Blizzard UI when testing new raid encounters?

You can't really use mods in testing, as it presents an unnecessary variable that can affect things. You know why GMs are always saying 'reset UI'? It's the first variable to eliminate in troubleshooting. You have to work from a clean slate, with the game code alone to see what may be a bug.
