Its not because of the numbers.
IF you look in any statistics manual or textbook, as your sample size approaches 40 their standard deviation begins to have a larger and larger confidence level.
In english - 40 people are a decent sample size to model a large population.
I know, it sounds crazy, i dont want you to or expect you to believe me. But look it up.
Anyway, the reason they arent a good sample is because the moderators delete threads or posts, and even ban posters, based on the content of their posts. This selective deletion of topics means the forums dont really corespond with player populations.
And these forums are MUCH MUCH more heavily modded than most people think.
A week ago a raider posted an anti-nonraider post. Drysc not only endorsed the post as fantastic, he then deleted any coherent response by nonraiders and handed out bans. And no not for cursing, flaming or trolling, but the logical posts.
And not Im not complaining about it, its blizzards forums.
But I do think people should know that what you are reading is not a very good representative sample of opinions. Pro-raiding opinions are going to be agreed with and protected by the mods, while anything else will often be deleted if there are mods on at the time.

I agree with your overall statement, the forums are not a good sample of the playerbase. Many players never post, many more have probably never even visited a forum. We have to take into account that some amount of players, somewhere, have an opinion that is not being expressed. We attempt to counteract this with such things as surveys sent through e-mail, etc.
What really drew me to reply to this thread was your claim that I had applauded someone's creation of a pro-raider thread, and then subsequently deleted and banned anyone that opposed the posters views. Can you point me in the direction of that thread? It isn't ringing a bell.

Q u o t e: Clearly you guys make important decisions primarily based on the forums, at least on some occasions. Remember the first time PVE > PVP was allowed? It was pulled because of the supposed outcry on the forums. Mage crying led to 1.11 review. Lots of stuff.
Clearly, it is a great source of feedback and we're lucky to have such a vocal playerbase. I wasn't meaning to imply that the forums have no place, or that they do not help us collect feedback, they are a great source of information. My meaning was that the forum community does not necessarily encompass the majority of players, and we do attempt to offset that by requesting feedback through other means.
I'm still hoping to be reminded of the thread about raiding that I went crazy in, don't let me down.[ post edited by Drysc ]
