Subject: Intelcore Support in 1.9.3! Yay!
WoW now supports the new iMacs and MacBooks!

Coolies! This makes them the first video game to support the new line of Apple computers.

...Of course, the MacBooks haven't shipped yet, but I can't wait to see it on one!

SecondLife has support for the IntelCore in-house, but has not offered it outside yet; they're still waiting for the computers to ship.

Yay! Now the most powerful, fastest system you can get to play WoW is a Mac!

Alas, Unreal Tournament was actually shipped as a universal application for Intel Mac, a few days before WoW 1.9.3. We tried to be there first, but the patch scheduling gods frowned on us.

Oh, where were we? Yeah, it is very impressive how fast the intel port came out. Did they really convert from Metroworks to Xcode? That in itself would give most developers huge headaches.

Yes, we did (change the app from MW to XC), but-

We didn't start on it when the hardware was announced in Jan 06; we started on it when the transition plan was announced in June 2005. Took a couple evenings at the WWDC conference to get it actually compiling and running up to the title screen on GCC4; after that it has been debugging and optimizing, getting it to work on PowerPC with GCC4, keeping up with all the WoW patches 1.5.x - 1.9.2, etc.

When we do the periodic automatic builds of the product we still actually build it with both compilers, the Metrowerks version just isn't shipped out to end users any more. This was handy during that last couple of months where we would see something odd on the GCC version, we could quickly check against the original Metrowerks build and see where the mismatch was. Over the last few weeks of testing they were a near perfect match, and here we are.

re the miscellaneous fireworks in the thread, I'd be happiest if everybody could just buy their favorite machine and play WoW on it :) and that we're glad to see the perf/price ratio move upward on the new iMacs (whether or not they are best/fastest/cheapest, whatever). Please have fun.
