Poster: Palehoof at 1/17/2006 12:58:04 PM PST Subject: Post Deletions: a FAQ. |
| |
1) Why was my post deleted?
First, be sure it was deleted and not just ignored. The forums move quickly, and if no one responds, your thread could be on page two by the time you click Refresh. If it was really deleted, a Blizzard staffer deleted it because it was outside the regulations of the forum. Common reasons are nonconstructive, off topic, or redundant threads. A good strategy to bear in mind: if you are about to post the third thread on your topic, you might want to simply post in one of the existing ones.
2) What can I do to protest this?
You can send an email to wowcmfeedback@blizzard.com to voice your disapproval. You could also immediately repost the same thing which just got deleted. This, however, is not usually a fruitful endeavor. Reposting a deleted topic is a good way to get another topic deleted. It's also a quick way to get a forum suspension, so if you're looking to martyr yourself for the sake of your discussion regarding why Blood Elves should not be the next Horde race, carry on.
3) Whatever happened to my freedom of speech?
You left it behind you when you entered a private forum. Your freedom of speech, if you are a US citizen, is guaranteed by the Constitution, which states in the first amendment that "Congress shall make no law" which infringes upon this right. Please be aware that Blizzard is not Congress and cannot enact legislation which is binding on US citizens. While you retain the right to not play World of Warcraft, you also retain your constitutionally guaranteed right to not be subjected to their rules regarding free expression against your will.
4) O RLY?
YA RLY.[ post edited by Palehoof ]
Moo, and so forth.

I would like this to serve as a reminder that "calling an MVP out" by insulting them is Not Cool(tm). If you have a concern with one of our MVPs, please, I implore you, eMail wowreportedpost@blizzard.com. The moderators forward the issues on to me, and I take care of them as I arise. The way to deal with an MVP is not by publically insulting them, particularly with full knowledge that they cannot retaliate. The only person that can change that tag is me, so I suggest you lodge complaints to the right person rather than derailing a thread.
Also, I'd suggest going easy on Kwesten's arguments, as he can't rightly respond at the moment.

Q u o t e: Caydiem, do you think we could get another MVP explanation post? The original is lost to the forums, and I often run into people asking me what's wrong with their monitor that my text looks bluish. Unfortunately, the people with creative definitions of the MVP program are usually faster than me in explaining. :/
I have an MVP Program FAQ that's been sitting in the edit queue for a long time. I'll try to get it pushed through tomorrow or so.

Palehoof had quite a following before he became an MVP. One notable moment was a "Ministry of Palehoof" post that grew quite large. When I first started talking about the MVP program, in fact, it was mentioned that I was sure to only select "fanbois", rather than the really good posters like... Palehoof. (And Darkholme, to be fair. ;) )
Of course, the outlook is a wee bit different now. ;)

The thing is, Pyatt, I picked these people for that very reason. The MVP Program is meant to provide a few knowledgeable figures in the community that can provide reliable information for those new or occasional visitors who aren't sure who to trust. And, by and large, the implementation has indeed helped the forum.

Q u o t e: The OP's post is off-topic and trolling. It should be deleted just like any other would be.
The OP's post is no more off-topic than the stickied Forum Guidelines are. This post is in the place where it is most needed, and does help to eliminate a lot of the confusion that comes with post deletions. I would sticky it, honestly, if we had room. It is not trolling, thank you, as I'm one of the people who makes that call. I agree that it does not directly pertain to World of Warcraft, but it does pertain to these forums and the General Forum in particular, and in this specific case, I feel it's warranted enough to remain open.
However, I would advise that, in the future, you use the biohazard symbol to report a post rather than post about it. Asking a moderator to delete a post via a post on the forums is not how our system works. :)

Q u o t e: Nice :)
You know I'm correct. I see posts like the OPs deleted every day.
Edit: I did use the bio sign to report this post. And I never asked for it to be deleted here on the forum. I stated it should be deleted. Thank you.
Let me rephrase:
Reporting a post by posting about it is not an accepted means of attempting to get something moderated.
Posts "like" the OP on this subject normally violate one of several guidelines: they're about a specific deleted post (explaining why it has been deleted), or is insulting to a group of people (whether it's the posters in question or Blizzard).
This is fairly straightforward.
And in the end, Trevion, it's my call to make. The call has been made, and the post is staying. Thank you. :)

Q u o t e: In other words, you're admitting that rules dont apply to MVPs? Its clearly off topic.
Nope.
There are occasionally exceptions to the rules. This includes posts made by regular posters as well as MVPs. This post, while not about World of Warcraft, is a good message and belongs in the General Forum due to the way it operates. I might still remove it if it had no beneficial effect on the community, but it has today, very noticeably.
I would have endorsed it no matter who posted it. (This isn't an excuse to go posting it word for word again, as that constitutes spam.)
Allowing it to remain is aiding in managing the community on the whole.
You're welcome to give feedback on this by eMailing wowcmfeedback@blizzard.com. However, understand that I'm not staying to argue this. The post is staying, as it helps the community on the whole. I do appreciate your opinion on the matter, however.

Q u o t e: So basacally, you're allowing someone to break the rules because you like the post? I dont remember reading 'sometimes we let them slide' in the sticky telling us what to do and what not to do?
This thread, as it stands (unstickied) is 100% worthless, as it will drop in a week, and no one will read it.
This is just showing inconsistancy in moderation, as I get banned for calling tseric retarded (which I probably should have...), yet someone who posts something that is clearly off topic recieves nothing, not even a deleted post.
Once again, Pyatt: wowcmfeedback@blizzard.com. I've explained my reasons for keeping it around, and it's done some good today. If you care to have your voice heard regarding moderation, that's the eMail for you.
