I'm sure that this will get some serious hate flames, but here we go anyway.
Why doesn't Blizz shut down the game for say 4-7 days, credit the players for down time and fix the problems that are currently happening in the game? I know, people will say "they can't afford to lose 2.5MM per day", but by taking in 75MM per month, I would have to say, "yes they can".
Not only would this give them time to fix the problems we are currently having, but there would not be a need to "hotfix" or "patch" every other day. We could all log on to a "new" patch that has been tested and hopefully fixed. It seems with all the daily maintenance that BLizz must have for this game, that the time needed to "fix" issues is not available.
Plan for the down time, identify the problems and what is required to fix them, NOTIFY the community of what needs to be done and how long it will take, UPDATE us on the progress and lastly IMPLEMENT a much cleaner gaming experience for all of us to enjoy. If it was properly planned and executed, I am sure that the gaming community would at first be upset, but would find something to do for the time the game is down and truly enjoy the outcome of the hard work that would need to take place to "fix" the game.
Well, enough said...bring on the flames.
Just a gamer...
playing a game.

It seems simple, but honestly? It largely wouldn't help.
A lot of the fixes are time-sensitive. We can't do it all tomorrow, and they'll be fixed whether the game is running or not. Having the realms up isn't a detriment to fixing the issues -- actually, it can help them get resolved all the faster. We have a QA team, but in the software industry, there will inevitably be things the players catch that QA doesn't. Dozens of people vs. 5 million? There's a significant advantage there. Players find said issues quickly, and we pounce atop them. If the realms were down, it may take a while for them to surface, so no time would be spared there.
We also plan on doing work on the servers themselves, but again, that's dependent on outside factors. Money can't always replace time.
In short, while I appreciate your suggestion, this would not help anything in the short or long run. No one is idle on this team; we're all working to make the experience better for you. Shutting down the realms would do nothing to make that happen more quickly at this stage.

Q u o t e: 5 mill vs. a dozen... I knew that Blizzard is only a dozen people you have demostrated it for a long time.
Psst... dozens of people does not equal one dozen. The plural implies more than one. There are a few. :P
