I read your post saying how the end of beta was live people adding on each realm and its not possible anymore because there's 100 realms and GMs need to focus on their job...
But the thing is, I strongly suggest that you GMs demand a bit more liberty with your powers. To do events, that is. Maybe Blizzard could make an official list of events that GMs are ALLOWED to do only. Then GMs, when they're bored, or just out of the blue, can do any of the things blizzard said they're allowed to... Things GMs should be allowed to would be simple things, things to just pick the players' interest, mysterious things, even some GMs could even band together and make really interesting things.
For instance, make a ghost NPC appear for just a couple seconds/minutes around a graveyard or an isolated place ( or not ) and when you talk to him he says a weird enigmatic text, or just something mysterious like "Time is soon. Seek the purple that encases the sky at dawn. " You know, or something that has a lil bit more meaning =P. Now players would wonder what's the purpose of the NPC, now the GM or GMs that did that COULD make a little thing out of it, like make a chest spawn with a guaranteed green or fun-item (snowballs, etc.) ... Or, listen to this, they might just NOT do ANYTHING to followup what the ghost said! You heard me! Even if there is nothing to be gained of what the ghost said, the only simple fact that some players have reported seeing a strange ghost apparition out of the ordinary will pick some explorer's interest, stir some rumors ( gosh i looove rumors, I loved .hack//sign ) in guild chats or the forums.
I'm sure GMs have a wide imagination :) So please consider it! A blizzard GM-Can-Do and GM-Cant-Do list! Just more liberty for GMs! I loved big AND small/quick events led by live people, dynamically in older games!
P.S.: I don't think it's 100% NECESSARY that every event happens at the EXACT SAME TIME on ALL THE SERVERS. I don't care if the ghost doesnt appear on my server, but appeared on a few others, this is not the point. The point is: A LIVING WORLD. DOn't get me wrong, the scripted "world events" are amazing, and I'm waiting for more, but there is nothing like a GM dynamic, live event like end of beta demons.
So Blizzard! Let your GMs have some fun :) Because when they do, we usually do too =) .

I understand the desire there, but GMs need to remain focused on customer service tasks. While we've consistently improved, there's still a wait to take care of things, and I speak from experience when I say that the fascination and fun of this sort of activity can make more important and time-sensitive customer service tasks fall by the wayside.
Also, please keep in mind that the potential for abuse is humungous and the need for being canon is paramount. The GMs may be enthusiastic, but that does not mean they're educated on lore.

Q u o t e: How about a different Team of people that could focus on this one aspect of GM'ing while the Customer Service people get whipped into shape?
I have explained this time and again.

Q u o t e: Sorry Cay that doesnt cut it. Crappier MMOs with smaller playerbases have made this happen. Your telling me its impossible with all that money you guys get you cant program in a random event?
I know precisely how those MMOs did their events behind the scenes. I have never once stated it's impossible. Not once.
I have stated, however, that it is not a good return on investment, and that's really the deciding factor.
