During today's scheduled maintenance our engineers made changes to certain realms (listed below) in attempt to enhance the end user experience in World of Warcraft. We have been monitoring these changes closely and recently noticed circumstances which gave need for the changes to be reverted to their pre-maintenance state. This requires us to bring down these realms to make adjustments.
As such, the following realms will be brought down for emergency maintenance. We are working to bring them back up as quickly as possible. Please be advised that you may experience very small "roll backs" if you are booted off the realm when these restarts occur, so please attempt to log in time. We apologize for the inconvenience; thank you for your patience and understanding.

Ideally we'd love to give you more, but when we absolutely have to bring realms down, we can't let them sit for 15 minutes. I apologize for the interruption, but that's how emergency maintenance sometimes goes. :/

I can't go into intricate specifics, but we obviously would not bring realms down in prime time unless performance was going to degrade to the point of affecting far more people negatively. It's not something we lightly choose to do -- however, given our options, it was the best thing to do under the circumstances.
