I figured if I put 'Lore' in the subject, I'd attract the people who have answers. Moth to flame, baby!
Ahem. Anyway, here's my question.
What is/are the purpose, function, and abilities of Felhounds? It's been forever and a month since I've played WCIII.
I'd also like to know who 'created' them, and who they're known to serve, if anyone / anything.

Indeed... they're technically the hounds of the Pit Lords. It's said they come from a corner of the Twisting Nether -- no one type of demon "created" them; the Pit Lord rangers find them and train them once they mature from maggothood.
They are magic hunters, seekers of those who wield the arcane. They can sense magic, and burn mana from the casters themselves.

Q u o t e: Ooo, while we've got Cay here, is it true that demons are simply normal races that over the centuries have been corrupted by the evil magic? Does that mean that any races that use magic long enough will become demons?
What demons are you referring to? The Eredar and Nathrezim? They were more or less always as they are, though wielding fel energies certainly hasn't helped them. :P

Q u o t e: Well, now, wait a minute. If that's the case, why can a warlock have one as a pet? Wouldn't there be the concern of the Felhound just murdering the caster it was with? Wouldn't that make sleeping at night a little bit more of an adventure for a Warlock than they'd want?
That said, could they therefore be trainable?
The Felhunters they summon are not there willingly, nor are any of the demons they summon. They are controlled by the caster's will. Also, it is assumed that their more refined abilities come from intensive training by the Pit Lords -- the Felhunters summoned by Warlocks are, I believe, from the Twisting Nether rather than the Pit Lords' personal packs, thus granting them less powerful, more raw abilities.
And by "trainable" I assume you mean by Hunters? Heh, Felhounds are to Demons what Beasts are to the usual Azerothian races -- the methods of making one even remotely close to what one might call "tame" differs completely from what we know and understand to work. Hunters would have no success there with their methods.

Q u o t e: Thanks for this great response. Considering the BE's would have access to warlocks, by all indications, wouldn't they therefore be able to train these same demons to use as mounts? I certainly consider that it would be a risk to be a warlock, but that doesn't necessarily mean it couldn't be done by the BE's, especially considering (and correct me if I'm wrong) they've now made a deal with the Legion to use their energies in place of the Sunwell.
Am I correct?
Not all of it was. :)
It is one thing to summon a creature like the Felhunter and pit it against enemies. It is quite another to sit atop one when nothing is threatening and it considers you a delectable treat. The constant concentration needed would probably be too much for the Blood Elves, particularly since the creature would be much larger and thus harder to control. Consider that the entirety of the Blood Elf lands swim in magic -- a Warlock pet Felhunter alone would be nigh impossible to control, and that's with feeding it distractions. A mount? I don't think so.
As far as your other question...
They were not "normal" races, as Orcs and Humans. There is a passage in the Warcraft RPG book that I think is the source of this confusion -- it states that the demons were "mortal" once, but have since been changed by the demonic energies. Mortal is somewhat different from the perception you hold -- they were their own races once, but through the fel power they began to wield they changed into demonic beings of incredible power. Not in physical form, necessarily, but in terms of lifespan and what one might term in D&D as "outsider traits". :P

I'm no pitlord, but I damn sure have experience in ordering minions around to do my greedy tasks.
Precisely -- you are no Pit Lord. You are not privy to their training techniques -- you have no real means of understanding the Felhunter. Your methods of controlling the Felhunter are crude, and even as you grow more powerful, that particular Felhunter you keep pulling out of the Twisting Nether will hate you more and more, becoming difficult to control. Since you're more powerful, you can control it, but you don't suddenly gain great insight into the workings of a Felhunter's mind. :P

Q u o t e: You are quite mistaken Caydiem as all mortals are with demons. (Speak with the Gnome trainer for the imp quest.)
Demons are bound to the warlock they give there vary lives in there service. Love no.
But they are bound and were won with each quest of there summon.
The first time a demon is summon it is a test of will and power. After that its purpose in existance is the caster to protect it and serve them.
Why make friends that can betray you for there own selflesh purposes.
With a demon you are its purpose. Warlock unlock the dark love of the gods themselves and with that they gain power.
The price there soul and the soul of another. Two souls for the price of one seems fair to me.
You can have your pets/friends Warlocks have minions.
Who would you trust more?
Pet or minion?
I'm certain the Imp simply complains at you to be cute, then, rather than out of any true annoyance at your control. You are controlling them, yes, but being bound to you is different than understanding and completely controlling every aspect of your little "minion". If that were true, you'd be able to control your Imp's mouth, then, too. ;) They are unwillingly bound to serve you -- there is no love lost between Warlock and summoned Demon.
