OK, i have a few questions about GMs.
Howcome ive never seen a gm in game?
when i do a /who on a gm who contacts me, how come it says "0 players found?"
what are the requirements for being a gm?
can i be a gm?
do the gm robes give you any stat bonuses? if so, what?
What are the responsibilities of a GM?
can GMs quest or pvp?
are GMs killable?
can you toggle "GM mode" on and off?
answer please!

GMs do not show themselves unless it is absolutely necessary.
GMs are not normal characters, so they are not found by normal means.

GMs are not normal characters. The GMs themselves have separate characters that they play with, just like you and me.
GMs use separate characters for work and play. They are not the same characters, and there is no toggle.

GMs are not assigned realms. It's hard to "get to know" the playerbase across 100+ realms. In addition, the GMs do play the game -- separately -- and thus do know quite a bit about the game.
In general -- and I speak from personal experience as well, having experience in the support crews of two other MMOGs -- it is better to be impartial and slightly distanced from the players than chummy, since the latter can cause a variety of favoritism issues. They are not there to manage the community.
