What if I used words like, "I intend" to take out the trash and "I plan" on getting a job. And after a few months of my loved ones wating on me I tell them that, "Well.... My dearest loved ones, I never promised, I just said I was going to." What type of person would I be and how would my word hold up to other people?
It plain wouldn't. Plus, what if ever time my loved ones called me out on the fact that I goofed up again, I used my superior logic to wtfbbqwithgreenssaucenotmild them and make them look like fools in public when all they did was ask me why am I not doing what I am "planning" and what I "intend" on doing.
I don't know about you folks, but I never promise... Its taken some time to get this word out of my vocab and I'm still trying, but everything I say is a promise unless other wise said.
I'm not perfect, but maybe we should all try our best to make sure that we say.... "no promises, but we would like to...." or "we are trying to see if we can..." Then to knock people over the head with the notion we could say.... "this is in no way a promise, but it is something that we would like to get done as time permits."
Disclaimer: I already know some of this is being done.
The Defense Department would like to inform you that

There you go....
Maybe I'm missing the point, but this is basically what we do. Promising certain additions or updates has never been received well if certain details change during the period we announce it and when it is actually implemented (which, in MMOs, happens a lot). There are many factors which can change, so really all promising does is generate confusion, frustration and bickering. This, in turn, prevents us from doing our job effectively, which is to gather clear feedback.
as far as your example of: "This is in no way a promise, but it is something that we would like to get done as time permits.", this is also something we do in many fashions. The Battle Plan would be a good example. We want to generate interest and excitement about what we have in store, but we don't want to ruin the surprise, either.
All in all, I would like these forums to operate as a channel for constructive discussion, which doesn't really require promises, just listening and thoughtful questions.

Q u o t e: why do you post so long and constructively to such stupid threads?
In some respects, I think he had a valid question and I had a valid answer. This also gives me an opportunity to explain our position in a general sense and solidify our relationship with the customer.
That is done through communication. You dig?
