Two years of volunteer work in MMOs and on gaming forums got me the experience necessary for my first job in the game industry. I learned a great deal at that job, and contributed a little of everything to the finished product -- story, quests, art, live events, community management, and yes, customer service. From there I came here. :)
(To speak plainly, I am in the game industry, not the customer service industry. While I appreciate the attempt at the correction, I do know my job. ;) )

Referring to schooling, I take it? I went to art college. While this helped indirectly (when you're a naive artist that thinks your art is the pinnacle of all that is good in the world, having it viciously shredded by professors helps you grow one heck of a thick skin), there's not much that aided me in that department, I'm afraid.
Oh, I also worked on a game development project with a like-minded group of folks through this grand invention called the Internet, which helped build, if nothing else, a decent understanding of why game development isn't easy. ;)

I'm not a GM, however, and am not under the Customer Support department. Mind you, I am very much in the business of helping you folks when I'm able, but my job is community management. They're not really synonymous. They overlap, yes, but it's not the same thing.

True, but remember that there are alternatives now that there weren't before, such as college courses specifically designed around the gaming industry.
A passion for games -- in all aspects -- helps immensely. :)

Nope, no temp agency; all in-house, hired by our staffing team.
