Subject: DISAPPOINTING Ad Contest Results!
I'm simply appalled by some of the choices I am seeing made by the judges. My intention is not to sound rude or degrade anyones work; rather, I am completely baffled by many of the winning pieces and even more so by those given "excellence" and honorable awards!

Example: I fail to see, on comparison with many of the chosen pieces, how THIS piece did not make EVEN the honorable mentions!

Was this first come, first serve!? My shock cannot be expressed within this post…just look for yourself, please. The time ALONE spent on this piece is worthy of considerable recognition.

(All images were made using WoW/Photoshop and 3D software--alone. The size of the images is smaller due to upload efficiency)

Thank you

I was not one of the judges on this particular contest, but I'm normally on the panel, so I'll explain a few things...

We have a variety of things to consider when we're picking our winners. There have been times when an entry was excellent, but due to a certain aspect or element of the piece, we were unable to select it as a winner.

While your piece is technically very sound, the content may have leaned a little too much towards the subject of World War II. Certain elements that you added in are not in any way Azeroth-related and that may have hampered your chance to win. The other war-related ads used only Azeroth-based propaganda.

As an artist, I appreciate the time you took to create this, I do. Just remember that there will be times when it is not the quality of the piece that prevents us from selecting it, but rather the content.

Q u o t e:
Those ads were completely wow related. Why does it have to be WWII just because he modified a slogan. I see those ads as Battlegrounds/PVP oriented and 100% on target. Seriously seems like the judges were afraid they might offend someone if they picked those.

So there are helmets with symbols like that in Azeroth?

I've never looted one. ;)

Heh, thanks! ;)

I never got a confirmation email, so I dont even think I was in the contest.
And what of the sea-murlocs?!@#$
That was the best entry I had seen, so surprised it wasn't on that page.

I don't know what happened to the Sea Murlocs. We liked it, too. I'll look into it when more people are in the office...

(I'm all alone. *hyperventilates*)

Yeah.. wanna tell me where the cigars are in tthe game? Maybe you could point me in the direction of the mechianial squirrels?

Neither of those are directly related to a World War, Grumps and Namor. People are much less likely to be offended by what you named than by a poster using real life war propaganda.

We have to consider these things when we judge the contest.

Q u o t e:
That I (kinda) understand, however your comment was that an item in the poster was not in the game. Several of the posters that made the winning pages are referring to items that aren't in the game and thus shouldn't even be logically eligible.
That was why I made my comment.

I also went on to remark that other war-related ads only used Azerothian propaganda. I'm sorry if my inference wasn't clear -- it's early for me. ;)

leaned a little too much towards the subject of world war II, what about this one????

http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/contests/05-05-25/honorable/ss02.jpg

but let me guess that does not.

Why dont you tell that to the marines who fought on Mt. Surbachi (dont know hot to spell the island), or any other island in the South Pacific.

but I guess the judges where only counting the war on the other side of the world, in Europe right ??

what a load of bull @#$%, you you know it!!!

That looks to me like a Horde flag hoisted by Undead in Azeroth. There is no real life propaganda there. It's inspired by something, yes, but there is no actual real world symbol in that particular submission, unlike Namor's entry.

Do not use profanity, masked or otherwise.

I have yet to see a blue response about the whole mysterious "confirmation email".
Knowing that mine, friends, and the sea-murloc poster never got one of these makes me wonder if they were even judged.

Grumps, I believe the sea-murloc one -- from what I'm told -- was not submitted in the correct manner, so it may be that it didn't go through. How did you submit yours?

Q u o t e:
I do want it clarified ... I am by no means opposed to the creation of art and fully support an artist's right to free speech! On that same notion, I support the right of anyone that wants to criticize that art. It creates debate which is an excellent way for knowledge, understanding, information, or just a person's opinion to be shared. Both good and bad.

I personally found the Blizzard art demeaning toward women and found the flag raising entry distasteful. I have the freedom to have that opinion. I am familiar with the context of the source they were derived from. In my opinion, to correlate it to a fantasy videogame does no justice to the original. The original poster of Rosie was created to empower and inspire women to help in the war effort. Blizzard's takes an icon and symbol of that effort and makes it a faux advertisement for a computer keyboard. The added statement on the poster "Gets rid of unsightly body hair" just adds salt to the wound. Others might find that statement and the poster clever, humorous, or neat. I however do not.

I was mainly commenting on Caydiem's statement of "there is no actual real world symbol in that particular submission" in reference to the flag raising entry. I wholeheartedly think Caydiem is 100% wrong. Like I said previously, go visit Arlington National Cemetary.

Given that I have these things as context when I viewed the pieces, I personally think they can be considered a parody even if that was not the artist's intention. Some things should remain a bit sacred. Others apparently disagree. That is perfectly fine.

Dakkas, I know very well what it is. My point is this -- it was done in such a way that every single element therein is from Azeroth, not the real world, unlike Namor's. Yes, the pose is extremely close to that of the famous memorial, but it's a parody -- all the elements are Azerothian, as should be.

The other wartime ads submitted take inspiration from the posters of that era -- the composition very closely mirrors real-world posters. But the elements themselves are entirely from Azeroth, and thus it makes an acceptable parody according to the judges. Also -- to note -- only the top five entries on that page are actual prize winners. The others are displayed to show some other wonderful entries we received.

I apologize if these entries offend you in any way, but I do not believe we will be removing them.

Q u o t e:
you know its sad when blue people are on the board of reviewing art work, Caydiem when you get a masters degree in graphic design let me know.

to the OP yours is good work, as a college art professor you showed knowledge of the software and the ability to state a message. most of those that won, my freshman college students who never used photoshop before could pull off a better piece, but then again they have study the concept of design, structure, princple, and the rules.

it just goes to show in corporate USA its not about quality and how much tech skills you have, its about producing quick eye appealing designs that get the message across.

So the fact that I majored in Fine Art with a Digital Art focus means nothing, eh? ;) Ah well, can't please everyone.
