I noticed today that PVP mounts still require you to have the horse riding skill. This means you still need revered reputation to actually get a mount from a race different from your own, which doesnt seem right. Is this intended or just something overlooked? [ post edited by Proxy ]

This is intended. There are mounts for all races in the PvP reward system, as illustrated here:
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/pvp/rewards-mounts.html
So you can indeed get the "full benefit" of your rank by purchasing the mount you can ride.[ post edited by Caydiem ]

If you have the appropriate riding skill, you can ride them, but it requires learning said skill from the trainer.

Doesnt say anything about needing revered reputation.
While the website does not state as such, the in-game items all say "Requires X Riding" where X is the type of mount.

Actually, i went into the officer's place and...the mount vendor doesnt sell Epic War Chickens:) (gnomes). Where are the gnomes mounts?
It may not have been listed for you because you cannot ride them regardless. ;)
