So....
You know the reason why the mods never talk about the "technical" aspects of the servers going down.... well, here's the truth.
They like most MMO companies are at the mercy of Outsourced servers. Meaning, the companies they're paying your $22.5 mill towards, lets say $5 mill of that goes to server maitance (or in our case "emergency maitance" and then the rest pays off their debt and their employees.
So, bring in the 1.5 Million WoW players world wide now using servers that are outsourced that CANNOT handle the load, hence why if they crash, they end up crashing pretty hard.
Now why is it that Blizzard is so quite about the servers? I mean honestly we don't hear jack $!@% about "what" and "where", we just get "oh their down" and, we also do not hear the aftermath of why they tanked. We go back to playing the game which is EXACTLY what Blizzard wants us to do.
Just come to grips with the fact that we'll never get anything technical from the Mods like: "We had a SQL database error that was causing a leak in memory and we had to rebuild the database and get the servers stable again."
Expect answers like we're getting:
"We apologize for the delay in news on the servers. The following realms were taken down for emergency maitance:
Lightbringer
Icecrown
Bloodhoof
etc
We should be bringing them back online shortly with minimal player impact.
Again, we're sorry for the delay."
The only light at the end of the tunnel is their test servers.
Those I would HOPE that Blizzard is running those internally. But... we'll never know for sure.

At the risk of stating the obvious. You are correct. Blizzard does not make nor host its own servers.
