You have nothing to worry about in this case. The Blizzard background downloader is a new content delivery method that we introduced in patch 1.10.

You can read more about it here:

i am fairly sure i went through the turning off procedure when the downloader was first mensioned a few months back.
It seems to have turned its self back on.

i'll turn it off again and see if this happens again.

Well it should not turn itself on again after you have disabled it, so please let us know if the blizzard background downloader keeps starting up even though you turned it off.

Q u o t e:
I disabled this last night as I hadn't read this thread and thought it might be virus-related. Will this mean I have a lot to download when the new patch comes out or is this stuff forever lost to me?

There is no need to worry if you do not have the blizzard background downloader enabled. You will still be able to download the patch the normal way you are used to, when the patch is released at some time in the future.

The background downloader is there to make sure that patching goes faster when a patch is released, so that you do not have to download the entire patch on the actual released day of a new patch. The background downloader downloads future content that is finished and ready to be implemented in a future patch, and when that patch is ready to be released, you will already have most of the data needed for the patch and will thus only be required to download a small amount of data before you can start the patching procedure.

If you feel like you disabled the blizzard background downloader by mistake, you can re-enable it by opening the Blizzard Downloader program. When the program is opened, you click on the File menu, and then you select Preferences. Here you check the checkbox that is labeled Enable Background Downloading.
