Is it normal to have an invisible GM join your raid to "collect data"? They join as a lvl 1 inside the dungeon (invisible, untargetable) but you get /say messages from them in your chat log with a <GM> label?

Hi - that's me.
Yep, we're looking at FPS issues with raids, whether our own code or UI addon related.
I should have posted here in the raid section. We were in a bit of a rush to gather data to home in on possible fixes so there were a couple groups that I "cold called" on. What we are doing now is posting an email address and taking volunteer guilds, this reduces confusion and is much more orderly.
The reason we need to put a character into the raid party is that it lets us witness more precisely which code is being heavily impacted by party activities - simply porting in as an invis GM char does not see the same kind of overhead. Joining the party properly duplicates the message traffic and UI behavior seen by the end user in these events.
The trips have been very successful so far and we hope to show some beneficial changes in 1.9.0.
(and thanks to those that let us pursue this).

Q u o t e: so what's with the change your passwords stuff?
Uninformed GM's? (gasp! /sarcasm)
It's never a bad idea to change your passwords periodically anyway, so no harm done here.
I can see that our well intentioned visits may have caused undue confusion and concern. The GM staff can verify that any character name seen in-game in this role, belongs to a developer, if you have any concern about that.

Q u o t e: Could you please explain why I saw an actual <GM> in MC the other day as an actual player in an actual raiding guild? Was able to do a /who and everything. He was talking to people in general chat and was like everyone else in everyway except he had the <GM> in front of his name.
if it was a "level 1", it was probably me. These are throwaway characters we created with GM privileges so they can teleport around the World of Warcraft to observe stuff.
The reason why - we're running profiling tools on the code to get a better picture of why we see FPS lag in some big instances. Turns out some of the lag issues only occur when acting as a raid party member. By reproducing the FPS lag in the lab, we can see much more precisely which code is bloating up at runtime and needs attention for a patch.
We realized it was easier and faster to pay a visit to some real raids (where raid leadership was willing to sacrifice one player slot, as the visiting GM character makes no gameplay actions other than to observe) ... than to try and get 40 people rounded up at the company to run a raid. See posts above.

Q u o t e: It was a level 60 warlock with a decent amount of MC gear. I actually saw him in Kargath before our raid left.
OK, I don't know who that was. You're welcome to post the character name if you recall it and I can ask about it.

Hi all -
Sorry to those that might have expected a visit, yesterday was packed and I can only be in so many places at one time.
Today is the start of BlizzCon so I won't be visiting raids or online here for the next couple of days.
Next week we will do some more profiling visits. I expect to see improvements both for customers with mods and without, there's a few separate issues being addressed in different levels of the code.
Thanks everyone for the enthusiasm and interest.
