Pick-up groups can really be smooth and effortless experiences, but when everyone involved is an unknown variable you can certainly run into problems more readily. In my own experiences, if nothing else, I try to take a good story away from a failed PUG.
Have you ever tried to make a group with the games LFG system? From the looks of things the LFG update that was promised to us wont be around for the expansion.

That's what the meeting stones accomplish, a type of match making system that helps form groups easily. However, the differences being that group formation, experience, gear, knowledge, etc. are important to World of Warcraft players when forming a group with others, and that can be compounded by specific needs of the individual or specific needs of the instance. In Warcraft III you pretty much just have to hope that you play with someone of adequate skill, and that's really the only variable you care about.
In my original post I was referring to the process of being in a pickup group and the trials of playing with them, and not the process of finding a group. I also think you're attempting a bit of a bait there for information on a new LFG system, but that's a lure that would be pulled back with a vague reply, which you would find neither delicious nor informative.
