There are a lot of people out there, myself included, who would like to transfer their mains to different realms in order to play with friends (friends they met after starting WoW and picking an initial realm).
There are also a lot of people out there who don't care for the mass exoduses from high population realms that occur when you open up only select realm-to-realm transfers.
Why not let people transfer whatever characters they want to whatever realms they want on a limited (say... once a week? month?) basis? What prevents this from happening? Guild Wars certainly got this feature right, so I can't see how the obstacles could be impossible to overcome.

Being able to transfer characters to any realm you choose is something that is being looked into. At this time though, we do not have an ETA. As more information becomes available we will be sure to post it.
